THE LAST DITCH

The ghoulish dishonesty of Jimmy Kimmel – spiked

Liberal America is finally waking up to the cruelty of cancel culture.

All over the world, ordinary people are waking up to the true meaning of “woke.” Regular folks, “normies” if you will, have watched their leftist friends, family and neighbours in horror. They’ve seen them crow, jeer and rejoice at the death of a fellow-human. It has turned decent stomachs everywhere.

Those of us paying close attention to modern politics were well aware what these people were. Those who seek to replace markets, prices, incentives and personal choices with political power are naturally violent. They want to see us all forced to behave a certain way. They demand the surrender of all our individual rights and our total submission to the state.

Crazily, they see the state itself as morally superior. It is just a regional monopoly of legal violence operated by humans as flawed as any others. Yet they place it above all other institutions. To them, family, friends, neighbours and co-religionists are nothing in the face of Mother State’s perfect wisdom and kindly power.

No-one averse to force could hold such views. You don’t have to spend much time with them to realise that. Most of us, however, are too busy taking care of our families, friends and neighbours to pay that much attention.

If we thought of the comrades at all, it was as kindly, fierce-eyed bores. They promised something for nothing at election time. We believed them or didn’t but saw no malice in them. When they suddenly grabbed our attention with a ghoulish celebration of murder – creepily reminiscent of terrorism fans on the Arab street after 9/11 – it was for most people a genuine shock.

Charlie Kirk saw the political struggle in terms of a war between angels and demons in the spiritual realm. Most of us never took that seriously. Then we saw the faces. We looked into the eyes of crazed individuals on their “socials” as they danced in glee. You didn’t have to be particularly spiritual to notice that they looked, well, demonic. Then came the calmer, more media-savvy pundits on our TV. They quietly emphasised how very wrong Charlie’s opinions were, as if (though they denied it) that justified his murder.

They didn’t look like demons. They looked like Satan himself – aware that his demons’ celebrations were alerting future prey.

Whether we accept or deny that there’s a spiritual realm, we collectively shuddered at the recognition that evil is amongst us. As the days have passed since Charlie’s murder, we’ve watched the Left double down. They’ve tried to make victims of themselves. Hilariously, they’ve denounced the “cancel culture” they invented when it was suddenly applied to them. All with not a shred or tatter of self-awareness to clothe their intellectual nakedness.

Whom do they proffer as a counter-martyr to Charlie? What Orc do they push forward in mockery of our Elven hero? Jimmy Kimmel! How like the defenders of cancelled comedians of old they suddenly sounded, when telling us we couldn’t “take a joke.”

The author of the linked post advises Kimmel to apologise, correct his factual error and let his audience decide his fate. Then she explains perfectly why he can’t do that.

The problem the likes of Kimmel now find themselves in, though, is that if they adopt a conciliatory approach towards MAGA and Trump on their shows, the ‘progressive’ backlash would be fierce. This is largely their own fault. For the past 10 years or so, they have incessantly and dishonestly portrayed their political rivals as the second coming of Hitler and the Brown Shirts. There is little room for reconciliation now. This is their Frankenstein monster, and it might just kill them.

Charlie would hate the statement that;

There is little room for reconciliation

Attempting reconciliation was his thing. Leftists killed the one guy naive (or noble) enough to engage with them constantly. He listened to them as they abused him. He argued politely with them. That seems to have infuriated them more than anything.

So one of them killed him.

My Catholic friend, the Navigator, says all stories are variations of one. One way or another, the hero shows the meaning of John 15:13

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends

It’s in our nature to look for meaning in Charlie’s death and not just to console his bereft wife and children. It remains to be seen if he died – as most of us do – in vain. There is perhaps a faint hope that his murder will open the eyes of a generation to the long-forgotten question of good vs evil. Post-modernism would tell you that – like everything else it wants to undermine, including Truth itself – they’re just social constructs.

Hearts all over the world are feeling otherwise.

Tom is a retired international lawyer. He was a partner in a City of London law firm and spent almost twenty years abroad serving clients from all over the world.

Returning to London on retirement in 2011, he was dismayed to discover how much liberty had been lost in the UK while he was away.

He’s a classical liberal (libertarian, if you must) who, like his illustrious namesake, considers that

“…government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one.”
