BBC News – Mikaeel Kular: Police investigate offensive tweet.

In a just libertarian society, police would have told the "Edinburgh resident" mentioned in the BBC article to stop wasting police time.

Ah, but unlike the body of a toddler hidden a stone’s throw from a relative’s house, a Tweeter’s easy to find…

Not only in a ‘just libertarian society’ but in most societies not heading towards authoritarian madness.
It seems that, as the law stands, the police are acting within their powers to investigate this ‘offensive’ tweet.
I suppose you could say that the police could choose to turn a blind eye to it, but the greater fault is that the law exists at all.

Agreed. In a just society the law would be different. I was in an unusually laconic mood!

    Such a counterproductive process.
Half a dozen people have been outraged by a remark, we need to have a public trial with the world’s press in attendance to decide how offensive it was.

It appears there’s a level to Maslow’s hierarchy of which we were unaware if this has now become a ‘need’.

    Well done Julia.
Your comment summarizes the effectiveness and priorities of most police “services” these days.

Tom is a retired international lawyer. He was a partner in a City of London law firm and spent almost twenty years abroad serving clients from all over the world.

Returning to London on retirement in 2011, he was dismayed to discover how much liberty had been lost in the UK while he was away.

He’s a classical liberal (libertarian, if you must) who, like his illustrious namesake, considers that

“…government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one.”
