THE LAST DITCH

The 48 state US road trip is suspended for a day or so. I am, after a short interrogation by a surprised but unruffled Canadian immigration officer, in British Columbia as a grateful guest of JMB. I had a pleasant and uneventful trip from Wenatchee, WA today to Vancouver and am looking forward to good company and home cooking after a long time on the road.

Following the trip with interest, glad to hear it’s all going well.
Re immigration, in my experience the way to have a pleasant immigration experience is to enter a country by a quiet border post, preferably a road one used for the most part only by locals. If you see the local driver ahead of you wave to the officers out of his car window, and pass through without stopping, getting a cheery wave in return, you’re probably on to a winner.
Last time I entered the US, we drove across from BC at a remote border post in rural Washington State, and although there were formalities, the politeness and courtesy shown to us could not have been bettered anywhere. I don’t think they had ever seen a couple of UK passport-holders driving a Canadian rental car before!
Rather a different experience from the routine horror-stories you read about most of the bigger US airports.

Tom is a retired international lawyer. He was a partner in a City of London law firm and spent almost twenty years abroad serving clients from all over the world.

Returning to London on retirement in 2011, he was dismayed to discover how much liberty had been lost in the UK while he was away.

He’s a classical liberal (libertarian, if you must) who, like his illustrious namesake, considers that

“…government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one.”
