THE LAST DITCH

Stafford Hospital scandal: former boss claims he's a victim too – Telegraph.

Until the enquiry ends I don't know if he was to blame, but he was certainly meant to be responsible. That he shelters now behind claims of post-traumatic stress disorder (usually acquired on a battlefield, not in an office) suggests he wasn't nearly a responsible enough person to have had such a job in the first place. He should be compelled to appear by subpoena. As should whoever appointed him to a job for which, by his cowardice in the face of the public inquiry, he seems already to have proved himself unfit.

We’re a nation of big babies now. Mother’s apron has been replaced by vague and unproveable medical conditions. We need to grow up.

Often people forget it is the ones who appoint them who have the same mentality in the first place.

Quite so. Our politicians don’t accept responsibility any more (does anyone seriously expect the Foreign or Defence Secretaries to resign honourably when the Falklands are next invaded)?
Either people appoint people like themselves, or people emulate the people who appointed them in the hope they are more likely to forgive their own vices in others. Or a bit of both, most likely.

Tom is a retired international lawyer. He was a partner in a City of London law firm and spent almost twenty years abroad serving clients from all over the world.

Returning to London on retirement in 2011, he was dismayed to discover how much liberty had been lost in the UK while he was away.

He’s a classical liberal (libertarian, if you must) who, like his illustrious namesake, considers that

“…government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one.”
