THE LAST DITCH

Dick Puddlecote: It's Confirmed. Scotland Is Going Insane.

Mr Puddlecote is one of these, shall we say, trenchant bloggers whom I admire but am too gentle  to emulate. My personal view of Scotland is that the immense beauty of that country and the rich variety of its whiskies are Nature's way of compensating for the cretinous leadership its people have "enjoyed" (and sometimes, understandably, palmed off on us poor English).

I have often also thought the fighting spirit of the Scots was more an understandable therapeutic release of their frustration at their hopeless leaders, than evidence of any loyalty to them.

I do have to applaud Mr Puddlecote, however, for his turn of phrase in describing Scotland's current leaders as;

…so dense they could bend light…

As Oscar Wilde once said flatteringly to Whistler, "I wish I had said that". As Whistler replied, "You will, Oscar. You will."

    That’s indeed a good one. Now to more important matters – whisky. Mine’s an Isle of Jura because I like the peatiness – sliver of water or neat. And yours?

    The Glenlivet for after dinner, James. Laphraoig, Bruichladdich or Talisker (according to mood) for just drinking. Never more than a drop of water to unlock the flavour. But I’ll drink your Isle of Jura if you’re buying.

    Cheers for the link, Tom.
    Trenchant, eh? I like that. I do try so hard not to use those naughty words but it becomes just too difficult at times. Besides, nouns beginning with ‘c’ or ‘f’ are so much more evocative than rotter. 😉

    Hmmnn scotch. A female relative used to drink Glenlivet straight.
    I guess maybe because of that I only drink Scotch that way too, but I guess I prefer the Islay whiskies…
    …and American Borbon. Also did you ever try some of the flavoured vodkas. Lemon ones are almost like Limonchello only less intense and with more kick.

    Does bison grass vodka count? Zubrówka was my favourite when I lived in Poland. In Russia, I had a horseradish vodka once. Marvellous! The Sunday lunch of champions!! When I feel the need (in Summer) to pollute whisky with water and/or ice, I favour Bourbon. I couldn’t do it to a single malt. My Celtic ancestors would rise from their warrior graves.

Tom is a retired international lawyer. He was a partner in a City of London law firm and spent almost twenty years abroad serving clients from all over the world.

Returning to London on retirement in 2011, he was dismayed to discover how much liberty had been lost in the UK while he was away.

He’s a classical liberal (libertarian, if you must) who, like his illustrious namesake, considers that

“…government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one.”
