And the short answer is that they had no idea what was going on. 20-20 hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I haven’t checked, but I bet you a fiver that 50% or better of these errors were picked up by Taxpayers’ Alliance/Burning our Money at the time; even though not staffed by well-paid, prestigious, “specialist” journalists. An RSS feed to Burning our Money would have materially improved their performance. I think, unusually, you are wrong James. More things are explained by cock ups than conspiracies certainly, but we need a better explanation of why they let Labour bankrupt us without question or challenge. Surely it’s more likely they were biased or bought, than that they were barmy?

Tom is a retired international lawyer. He was a partner in a City of London law firm and spent almost twenty years abroad serving clients from all over the world.

Returning to London on retirement in 2011, he was dismayed to discover how much liberty had been lost in the UK while he was away.

He’s a classical liberal (libertarian, if you must) who, like his illustrious namesake, considers that

“…government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one.”
