THE LAST DITCH

Last night I was telling a friend over dinner about the wonderful website TEDTalks. TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is a conference. TEDTalks shares the best ideas from TED with the world,
for free. The site speaks of;

"trusted voices and convention-breaking mavericks, icons and
geniuses, all giving the talk of their lives in 18 minutes."

It is often fascinating stuff. You can view TEDTalks at the site, on YouTube or by free subscription on iTunes).

Here is a marvellous, humorous, terrifying example to set your imaginations racing.

    Funny really this is the sort of thing I’m pushing for. Glad to know people with clout are getting on with it.

    i’m pretty unimpressed. Outlaw antibiotics for chickens? In my jurisdiction they are used to treat infections (only). I don’t know of any examples of crossinfection by resistant organisms. The vast majority of problem infections are due to human therapy. A lot of this stuff seems like the same old, dreary “right-on” wet left stuff that all the sensible people think will solve all our problems. Create a federal US mental health organisation? Fantastic. Maybe it will be as good as the NHS one day. Oh, that’s right, the NHS mental health system barely even exists any more…give me a break.

Tom is a retired international lawyer. He was a partner in a City of London law firm and spent almost twenty years abroad serving clients from all over the world.

Returning to London on retirement in 2011, he was dismayed to discover how much liberty had been lost in the UK while he was away.

He’s a classical liberal (libertarian, if you must) who, like his illustrious namesake, considers that

“…government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one.”
