You have to laugh at the hypocrisy and idiocy of our rulers. What Mrs Paine and I don’t understand is why it’s better for retailers to charge for plastic bags than to provide paper ones, like those wicked un-Green Americans that the Left so hate? Will all retailers who introduce charges for plastic bags reduce the prices on  their goods so as to achieve the same net cost to their customers? If not, what is so virtuous about them increasing profits on a moral pretext? Are they not simply emulating those governments who find global warming a very convenient "truth" when it comes to raising taxes?

    Do you ever wonder whether you are getting a bit obsessed with one issue? Your obsession with anti-environmentalism borders on the mania seen in the Green Party for environmental issues or the xenophobic anti-imigration obsession of the BNP! Surely there are more important issues to get heated about in British Politics than whether the Government’s well-meaning if a bit limited attempts to reduce plastic bag use have succeeded?

    Like many of the MSM there are a few things here you are missing.
    The objective is not to make money out of bags in fact I believe the 5p will be donated to charity. Rather they are hoping to emulate the Irish experience and persuade all of us to bring our own bags with us. I use TESCO’s bags for Life which cost 15p and can be exchanged for new ones for free at any time they become too tatty.
    Secondly the objective of the bag ban is not to assist in any attempt to control global warming – it is intended to start to reduce the huge level of plastic pollution of the environment especially the sea.
    Plastic bags kill farm animals, wild animals, birds and fish in very large numbers.
    The conflation of the campaign against plastic bags (which is a good thing – no buts) with the climate change (not necessarily a good thing – debatable) is just nonsense.

    Well meaning? Are you serious?
    Don’t you realise that when nanny state and bloated socialist big government forces the proletariate off petrol, tobacco and alcohol that they will need something else to tax.
    Environmental taxes are all that they have left at the moment to fund themselves, at least until we are all chipped and they can start taxing orgasms.
