THE LAST DITCH

Thanks for the kind words in response to my "What is the point of blogging?" post. John East put me firmly in my place and I accept his deserved rebuke in the spirit it was intended. James Higham sympathised (that man is too good for this hard world) but also encouraged. Thank you, gentlemen.

Rob, however, played the guilt card by referring me to this account of what other members of Her Majesty’s forces -products of the self-same educational system as the Tehran 15- were doing even as I whinged pathetically.

He was right to do so. I apologise and promise to shut up on this subject until  unless Des Browne says something really stupid later today.

Tom, Glad to see you have recovered from your bout of despair. I take the weekend off and watch DVDs and when I come back one of the best has been in a crisis of doubt.
While writing for our local rag I have been frustrated by the lack of feedback and have felt the same way. I very quickly reach a stage where I wonder if it is worth it as I expect quick results. My job demands it and I expect it in my homelife also. As a balance I have a very +ve attitude to life and people in general. I have also had my doubts as have others.
Also remember that as a sub-species, bloggers tend to look at the –ve things in life. It’s so depressing that none of our politicians or public figures can do anything +ve. So when for the millionth time you read about another reduction in justice or freedoms it does make you wonder if your struggles are worth it.
In a nutshell, your work is appreciated and your articles worth a daily visit bar when I’m taking a break of course, I know you make me think, and as I consider myself Mr Average, I know there are many more readers who also get something from it as well although they do not participate as much as some who are as self opinionated. Your work is not wasted.

Tom is a retired international lawyer. He was a partner in a City of London law firm and spent almost twenty years abroad serving clients from all over the world.

Returning to London on retirement in 2011, he was dismayed to discover how much liberty had been lost in the UK while he was away.

He’s a classical liberal (libertarian, if you must) who, like his illustrious namesake, considers that

“…government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one.”
