THE LAST DITCH

Just once, to begin the celebration of my birthday, Mrs Paine has suspended the normal
rules designed to protect my health. It looked so good (despite the inauthentic bratwurst substituting for English bangers) that I thought I might have a Welshcakes Limoncello food blogging moment.

That looks ideal and exactly what I craved and didn’t have yesterday morning. If I want something like that, I have to make it myself or go out and have somebody make it for me. For food blogging, you have to check out Ian Greys gourmet post, leading in to his review of Welshcakes’ site.

Many happy returns for yesterday. I passed my half century 3 years ago, and I wish I could say that life was getting better. Sadly life in England is becoming almost intolerable and I, like you, am looking for an escape route. By the way, your breakfast does look very tasty, however, for me, it would be incomplete without English mustard. There is a suspiciously ochery looking paste clinging to one of the sausages which looks rather like Dijon.

Tom is a retired international lawyer. He was a partner in a City of London law firm and spent almost twenty years abroad serving clients from all over the world.

Returning to London on retirement in 2011, he was dismayed to discover how much liberty had been lost in the UK while he was away.

He’s a classical liberal (libertarian, if you must) who, like his illustrious namesake, considers that

“…government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one.”
