THE LAST DITCH

Link: Bob Piper : Time to reflect.

Bob Piper is going to take a break from blogging. That is sad. Whether or not his republication of the “Ministry of Truth” satire was well-judged, those of us on the right still want Britain to be a free country. Free speech means nothing if it does not include the freedom to offend. So many today are so easily offended that any entirely inoffensive statement is not worth the carbon emissions involved in making it.

Bob Piper’s views could scarcely be further from my own, but he is entitled – nay welcome – to express them. Besides, he is loud-mouthed, uncouth, misguided and ill-natured. What better icon could there be for the modern Labour Party?

I don’t blame the Tory blogger who tried to use Labour’s own “thought crime” weapons against them. An interesting point has been made, although I am not sure it has yet been fully understood. I am sure, however, that no-one outside the Labour Party wishes one of the most recognisable, infuriating voices in the blogosphere to fall silent.

Come back soon, Bob.

Tom, you know my view on freedom of speech – the Voltaire maxim – but this thing was more than that. I understand that the man tried to publicize the true identity of Praguetory and that is just not on. On the other hand, Piper is a great Tory weapon and he’s best back in the sphere.

Tom is a retired international lawyer. He was a partner in a City of London law firm and spent almost twenty years abroad serving clients from all over the world.

Returning to London on retirement in 2011, he was dismayed to discover how much liberty had been lost in the UK while he was away.

He’s a classical liberal (libertarian, if you must) who, like his illustrious namesake, considers that

“…government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one.”
