Link: BBC NEWS | Programmes | Panorama | Distract criminals, says minister. Who took our streets from us? The police force was originally set up with no more rights or duties than the rest of us. Police officers were merely there to do, professionally, what any of us might do…

Given my view as stated in my previous post on religious belief (my second most popular item), i.e. that my values are derived from my Christian heritage, the results of this “pop quiz” are surprising. I can understand that it doesn’t score me as an atheist. For it to do…

Link: Doonesbury@Slate – Daily Dose. Quotidian attacks on President George W. Bush are usually humourless and easily ignored. Cheap anti-Americanism underlies most of them, at least outside the United States. Mr Bush’s administration is just too easy a target, because of the “shock and awe” of its shocking, awesome incompetence.…

Link: BBC ON THIS DAY | 29 | 1976: Explosions rock London’s West End. Hardly breaking news, but sobering reading for those who tell us that everything has changed and that 19th Century notions of civil rights no longer make sense in 21st Century conditions. Terrorism is not new. There…

Link: Ellee Seymour – Why me?. There is a sense in which Ellee Seymour is cheating. She is no"citizen journalist" blogger, but a professional PR person and former "dead tree" hack. She spins, no doubt guilefully, for her political PR clients, making politicians look better than they are (why else…
THE LAST DITCH
Your blogger
Tom is a retired international lawyer. He was a partner in a City of London law firm and spent almost twenty years abroad serving clients from all over the world.
Returning to London on retirement in 2011, he was dismayed to discover how much liberty had been lost in the UK while he was away.
He’s a classical liberal (libertarian, if you must) who, like his illustrious namesake, considers that
“…government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one.”
