I have always liked a lot of Tom Paxton’s work. This, despite the fact that he’s an addle-brained leftist and that I personally saw him sign a petition in support of the IRA when I was a naieve youth waiting backstage for his autograph at the no-longer-with-us Free Trade Hall…

… for a fashion show. The Ambassador made some interesting comments about the Litvinenko case. Apparently, a decision is expected from the Crown Prosecution Service shortly and may involve asking the Russians to extradite a suspect. He expects this to increase political tensions between the two countries, which are already…

Link: Green talk but no green walk? | Ethical living | Guardian Unlimited Environment. I honestly think this is the best confession I have ever read in Pravda The Grauniad. One of its writers effectively admits, without a flicker of embarrassment, that he thinks his readers’ principles are often just…

Link: BBC NEWS | UK | Drivers tell of ‘contaminated’ fuel fury. This is an interesting story. Early indications suggest that the fuel in question originates from Greenergy, an independent oil company specialising in less environmentally-unfriendly fuels. Its "mission statement," in typical jargon, is: To deliver financial and environmental solutions…

Morecambe & Wise were funny once. Really. I remember laughing. The whole nation looked forward to their Christmas show; briefly united in laughter around the television. Stars of stage and screen humiliated themselves to appear with them. They were beloved. Then, one day, they weren’t funny any more. At first,…

Link: The ThunderDragon: Mini Meme – Most Popular Posts?. The only thing I have against Blogpower founder James Higham is his penchant for memes. At least this one, for which I have been "tagged" by The ThunderDragon, is easy. My two most popular posts, by a very long way, were…

Continue reading →: Boris and the other Turkey
Link: Telegraph newspaper online. I so rarely disagree with Boris Johnson that I hesitate to do so now, fearing I may be wrong. I would like to think I am. His vision of reconciliation is fine in its Christian idealism. His line on Turkey and the EU is seductive. I…
THE LAST DITCH
Your blogger
Tom is a retired international lawyer. He was a partner in a City of London law firm and spent almost twenty years abroad serving clients from all over the world.
Returning to London on retirement in 2011, he was dismayed to discover how much liberty had been lost in the UK while he was away.
He’s a classical liberal (libertarian, if you must) who, like his illustrious namesake, considers that
“…government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one.”

I like it and agree. I’m not sure how many others would! 😎
That’s a modern “more law” approach — and certainly consistent with our Establishment’s current aggressive approach. However I don’t want…
