THE LAST DITCH

Like the original and best Tom Paine, I am a devout republican but I hope my monarchist readers enjoy the parties. I shall be offline in rural Wales, so blogging is unlikely. Have an excellent extended weekend.

It’s always presented as a bi-lateral choice, Liz or Blair. This is of course, not the case.
None of the above is surely the rational position, simply abolish the post.

Get real! If we were to show any signs of becoming a republic, can you seriously imagine all the ex-pols, greasy-pole-climbers and the like voting to abolish this glorious “top job”??
It would become a straight choice between Liz or her successors and the equivalent of Blair.
Rationality and politics are not good bedfellows.

Um.. well If I have to choose.. I guess I choose Constitutional Monachy. These days I am wondering how much we actually need politicians.

Tom is a retired international lawyer. He was a partner in a City of London law firm and spent almost twenty years abroad serving clients from all over the world.

Returning to London on retirement in 2011, he was dismayed to discover how much liberty had been lost in the UK while he was away.

He’s a classical liberal (libertarian, if you must) who, like his illustrious namesake, considers that

“…government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one.”
