THE LAST DITCH

Libya: Col Gaddafi told to leave now or face the bombers – Telegraph.

Hang on. I thought the idea (already ill-advised in my view) was that we were authorised by the UN to enforce a no-fly zone to protect civilians from military attacks. Now it’s regime change already! Perhaps he really is the “heir to Blair” after all?

Why is it so attractive to these people to wield the power of life or death over strangers? I am no medical expert, but I understand there are names for such a psychological craving.

Starting a shooting war is now the equivalent of a 15 yard swimming certificate for new prime ministers, it proves you can hack it with the electorate.
Sarkozy is so desperately unpopular in France he really really needs this to happen.

Come commentators are deriding Dave for slashing the defence budget, then getting all narky with Johnny Foreigner.
Clearly, they have forgotten the aircraft available at our Duxford and Lambeth Road bases…

Because they are Them and Them have a specific mindset which has been posted on many times before. Of course they’ll do it this way.

I freely admit that I supported a no-fly zone. I have many friends in Libya, built up over ten years of visiting the place. They are good people who have never harmed a soul. They just want a peaceful life.
I am now starting to get uneasy about the mission creep.
Is this Gulf War 1 all over again? Do they intend to keep going this time until Gadaffi and his boys are all dead?

Tom is a retired international lawyer. He was a partner in a City of London law firm and spent almost twenty years abroad serving clients from all over the world.

Returning to London on retirement in 2011, he was dismayed to discover how much liberty had been lost in the UK while he was away.

He’s a classical liberal (libertarian, if you must) who, like his illustrious namesake, considers that

“…government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one.”
