THE LAST DITCH

Revealed: e-mails that toppled key Brown aide – Times Online.

This is beyond a joke. It seems that our Prime Minister has surrounded himself with a cabal of ethical degenerates. He must be held to account for his team's behaviour. He chose these people. They know his mind. Even if he didn't order it, people who were close to him must have believed this is what he wanted. How, exactly, did they get that impression?

Prudence? A moral compass? Don't make me laugh.

The underlings in Downing Street may well have acted without Brown’s explicit orders;plausible deniability will be maintained. But underlings don’t take action that they think the boss will disapprove of.
The boss sets the tone, and lets it be known what type of action that can be undertaken even though he doesn’t issue specific instructions.
McBride is responsible and deserved to go, but the foul atmosphere in No 10 that allows this disgraceful behaviour to arise is because of Brown, his character and political and personal goals.
Not enough has yet been made of this; that this episode exposes the character of Brown and his government, not just the actions of McBride.

Tom is a retired international lawyer. He was a partner in a City of London law firm and spent almost twenty years abroad serving clients from all over the world.

Returning to London on retirement in 2011, he was dismayed to discover how much liberty had been lost in the UK while he was away.

He’s a classical liberal (libertarian, if you must) who, like his illustrious namesake, considers that

“…government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one.”
