THE LAST DITCH

Link: BBC NEWS | Programmes | From Our Own Correspondent | The winners and losers of modern Russia.

I am not breaking my permanent rule about avoiding comments on Russian politics. I am a guest in Russia, and one does not criticise one’s hosts. I will merely observe that the Russians are doing their best in difficult circumstances to retreat in an orderly fashion from the path they followed for 80+ years.

This blog is about British politics. The point of this post is to highlight the type of nostalgia which only a British leftist could feel for the “certainties” of the Soviet Union. Yes there are “winners and losers” in today’s Russia. The BBC’s correspondent might (or might not) like to compare the fate of today’s losers with those of the Soviet era.

How like dear Comrade Auntie at the Bolshevik Broadcasting Corporation to publish such a piece.

Tom is a retired international lawyer. He was a partner in a City of London law firm and spent almost twenty years abroad serving clients from all over the world.

Returning to London on retirement in 2011, he was dismayed to discover how much liberty had been lost in the UK while he was away.

He’s a classical liberal (libertarian, if you must) who, like his illustrious namesake, considers that

“…government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one.”
