THE LAST DITCH

I suggest that all Christian, Jewish, gay and female police officers immediately file for permission not to be required to guard Muslim embassies or mosques or to respond to emergency calls to Muslim homes. They should state clearly that this is in protest against 9/11, the Madrid bombings, 7/7, the beheading of innocent hostages and the endless stream of anti-semitism from the Muslim community.

They have certainly let the cat out of the bag now.
I await with interest to see the first gay policeman relieved of his duties guarding a gay pride march, under a conflict of interest call

If this is not the conculsive reason for having elected Chief Constables I do not know what is. It is all about accountability, if a Chief Constable who is elected allows this to happen on his watch, he knows he will be voted out at the next election by the people he is supposed to serve. Political correctness is a insiduous malaise caused by unaccountability, and it allows minorities to impose their will on the majority. Elected chief constables is on the political agenda, but Oliver Letwin for one is against it because it means trusted the people of this country, rather than the Whitehall Centralists.

If the Tories are serious about devolving power, then I agree that this would be an obvious measure. I would be all in favour of the American model of electing every local official from the mayor through the DA (prosecutor) to the rat-catcher. Then we could dump most levels of local government.
This is a truly offensive story and heads should roll. I doubt if they will though. I can’t imagine WHAT someone has to do today to be forced to resign from public office in England.

Tom is a retired international lawyer. He was a partner in a City of London law firm and spent almost twenty years abroad serving clients from all over the world.

Returning to London on retirement in 2011, he was dismayed to discover how much liberty had been lost in the UK while he was away.

He’s a classical liberal (libertarian, if you must) who, like his illustrious namesake, considers that

“…government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one.”
